Al Ain hosted an exceptional cultural and heritage evening as the Zayed Central Library organized a distinguished event celebrating the “Memory of Pearls” in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the rich maritime legacy that once formed the backbone of economic and social life in the UAE and the wider Gulf region before the discovery of oil. The event attracted a distinguished audience of government officials, academics, heritage specialists, library staff, media representatives, and cultural figures who gathered to attend this important documentation and heritage initiative.

The evening commenced with a welcoming address delivered by Latifa Al Kuwaiti, Director of Zayed Central Library, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the library’s pioneering role as a beacon of knowledge and intellectual enlightenment dedicated to connecting younger generations with their historical roots and preserving national identity. The event was moderated by Mona Salem Al Kindi.

In the first session, Aisha Al Hammadi, Director of the Abu Dhabi Pearl Center, delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the center’s history since its establishment in 2007 and the strategic objectives behind its creation. She explained that the center was initially founded to advance scientific research in aquaculture, ensuring the sustainable propagation and protection of oysters within their natural habitats while safeguarding marine ecosystems. Over time, its mission expanded to encompass technological leadership and national capacity-building, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading regional hub for oyster cultivation and the production of high-quality pearls.

The second segment explored the artistic and aesthetic dimensions of pearls. Renowned Emirati jewelry designer Adi Al Fardan led a specialized session on the history of natural pearls, both locally and globally. He provided fascinating insights into the distinctions between various pearl types, discussing their shapes, sizes, and quality indicators. Al Fardan highlighted how natural pearls harvested from the Arabian Gulf’s pearl-diving grounds were once among the most valuable and sought-after treasures in international markets, citing historical trade routes that established the UAE as a significant center in the world of luxury jewelry for centuries.

The third session featured an in-depth intellectual and analytical discussion with Dr. Fatima Suhail Al Muhairi, who presented her documentary work titled “Abu Dhabi and Pearls: A Story with a History.” Drawing upon historical documents, rare maps, and firsthand accounts, Dr. Al Muhairi demonstrated how pearls played a pivotal role in shaping Abu Dhabi’s economic and political relationships with major nations around the world. Adding an interactive heritage dimension to the evening, Rashid Al Hammadi presented a live demonstration of the traditional profession of pearl oyster opening. He explained the meticulous techniques historically used to extract pearls from oyster shells without damaging them, offering attendees a vivid glimpse into one of the Gulf’s most cherished maritime traditions.

Following the discussion sessions, the library administration guided guests through two key exhibition areas. At the accompanying jewelry exhibition, visitors explored stunning collections of rare natural pearls, fine jewelry, and artistic creations that beautifully blended heritage with contemporary craftsmanship. Afterward, Mona Salem Al Kindi led attendees on an informative tour of the Zayed Central Library’s facilities, introducing them to its diverse departments and the advanced knowledge, digital, and cultural services it provides to the community.

At the conclusion of the evening, Latifa Al Kuwaiti, Director of Zayed Central Library, honored the speakers in recognition of their contributions. She affirmed that the event once again demonstrated that the story of pearls in Abu Dhabi is far more than a chapter of economic history; it is an enduring and authentic component of the UAE’s national identity and cultural heritage.
