Poland’s public health agency, the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS), warned on Monday that the nylon colander spoons, advertised as a tool for scooping Polish dumplings (pierogi), are releasing harmful primary aromatic amines (PAAs) when coming into contact with food.

PAAs are chemicals commonly used in dyes, pigments, coatings, and inks, and can be found in many everyday products, like clothing, hair dyes, cosmetics, kitchenware, or food packaging materials. But researchers warn the substances can be potentially carcinogenic, linking the exposure to PAAs to bladder, lung, and kidney cancers.

Contact with the chemicals can also lead to infertility, disrupt the endocrine system, and cause damage to the liver, kidneys, thyroid, and eyesight. Following a routine inspection, GIS said that “the migration of chemical substances – primary aromatic amines – from the product (a pierogi utensil) into food was detected. “Primary aromatic amines are substances that may pose a risk to human health and should not be present in food.”

Retail chain Topaz which distributes the spoons said it had now withdrawn the product and have asked customers who bought spoon to return it for a full refund. Manufactured in China, it was distributed in Poland by the Topaz retail chain, which mainly operates in the eastern part of the country. The nylon utensil is now being taken off the shelves, and customers who purchased it are asked to return it to stores for a full refund.
