Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced on Friday the launch of specialized clinics dedicated to treating internet and video game misuse and addiction. The move is part of the “Your Health is Your Happiness” (Sahtak Sa’ada) initiative, which prioritizes national mental health.
The initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting mental well-being and human development, following directives from Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population.
According to the Ministry’s official spokesperson, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the first phase includes six major hospitals covering a broad geographical range, including Greater Cairo, the Delta, and Upper Egypt. Starting now, specialized clinics will operate every Wednesday at the following locations:
Abbassia Mental Health Hospital (Cairo)
Khanka Mental Health Hospital (Qalyubia)
Maamoura Mental Health Hospital (Alexandria)
Damira Mental Health Hospital (Dakahlia)
Minya Mental Health Hospital (Minya)
Assiut Mental Health Hospital (Assiut)
These clinics serve all age groups using an integrated strategy. This includes early diagnosis through comprehensive psychiatric examinations, the establishment of “safe hours” guidelines for different age groups, and the use of digital assessment tools-such as the “Internet Addiction Questionnaire”-to tailor appropriate treatment plans.
Dr. Ayman Abbas, Head of the Central Administration for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, confirmed that 120 medical staff members and clinic employees have completed training. This ensures care is delivered according to the latest international protocols and enhances the efficiency of specialized medical personnel.
Dr. Sally Noubi, Director of the National Platform for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, noted that these clinics are a crucial step toward protecting the social fabric and developing human resources. She encouraged citizens to utilize the awareness and diagnostic services available through the National Platform for Mental Health at mentalhealth.mohp.gov.eg.
The Ministry affirmed that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address contemporary psychological challenges stemming from the widespread, excessive use of digital technology. The goal is to safeguard the mental health of individuals and families while raising public awareness about the risks of digital addiction and the methods available for prevention and treatment.
