North West Police Arrest 827 in Shanela 2 Operations

Police in the North West province have arrested 827 suspects for various crimes during the ongoing 2025/2026 Safer Festive Season weekly high-density (Shanela 2) operations. According to the Office of the Provincial Commissioner, the arrests included 398 known suspects apprehended by detectives during suspect-raiding operations between Monday, 24 November and Sunday, 30 November 2025.

Arrests and Charges
The suspects face charges ranging from drug-related offences to violent crimes:

• 16 arrested for dealing in drugs
• 40 for illegal dealing in liquor
• 150 for possession of drugs
• 44 for rape
• 9 for murder
• 196 for assault (common and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm)
• 26 for burglary at business and residential premises
• 59 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• 36 illegal immigrants arrested for contravening Section • 49 of the Immigration Act, Act 13 of 2002

Confiscations and Inspections
Police confiscated liquor, drugs, precious metals, tobacco products, 35 rounds of ammunition and seven vehicles. In addition, 403 premises, 3 251 persons and 3 773 vehicles were searched. Out of 702 liquor premises inspected, 79 unlicensed outlets were closed.

Commissioner’s Statement
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, said the Safer Festive Season High-Density Operations, coordinated and commanded by District Commissioners and Senior Officers, are gradually decreasing high levels of crime. He commended the work of police members and partner role players, noting that their efforts continue to keep communities safe during the festive period.
