Argentina has formally designated chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood operating in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan as terrorist organizations, according to an official statement issued by the office of the president. The decision places the groups on Argentina’s Public Registry of Persons and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and Its Financing (RePET).

The statement said the move is part of the country’s commitments to combating terrorism and its financing. The move was initiated by President Javier Milei and adopted through coordination between the ministries of foreign affairs, national security, and justice, and the Secretariat of Intelligence of the State, the statement said.

According to the presidency, the designation is based on official reports citing transnational illicit activities, including involvement in terrorism, public incitement to violent extremism, and alleged links to other terrorist organizations. The statement said the measure prevents members of the Muslim Brotherhood and their affiliates from operating freely.

Argentina also said the designation would enhance international cooperation with countries that have already classified the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, including the United States, Israel, Paraguay, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, where the group was founded. The United States on Tuesday also designated the Egyptian, Lebanese and Jordanian chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as global terrorist groups.

“Chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood purport to be legitimate civic organizations while, behind the scenes, they explicitly and enthusiastically support terrorist groups like Hamas,” the US Treasury Department said in a statement. Egypt welcomed the move as a “key step that reflects the gravity of the group and its extremist ideology and the direct threat it poses on regional and international security and stability.”
