Piotr Krzyżowski, 46, reached the summit of the Dhaulagiri, 8,167, on October 1, just a week after summiting Manaslu at 8,163 meters, both of which lie in the Himalaya. The two successes means that in the past five years, the Polish mountaineer, who is a lawyer by profession, has climbed 10 of the world’s mountains, including K2 and Everest, without oxygen or support from Sherpas.
Climbing at high altitudes without oxygen is regarded as one of mountaineering’s greatest challenges owing to the dangers it involves. With only four of the world’s 14 eight-thousanders left to climb, Krzyżowski is establishing himself as one of the leading Himalayan climbers of his generation.
