Egypt’s Attorney-General Mohamed Shawky ordered on Monday placing the names of those who fail to pay court-ordered alimony on travel ban and arrival watchlists.
The Egyptian Public Prosecution said in a statement that this action falls within its constitutional and legal mandate to enforce judicial rulings. This measure is taken to uphold the binding nature of court rulings and safeguard the rights of those awarded alimony, particularly the rights of wives and children, which are guaranteed by law and protected by special safeguards.
The Public Prosecution urged those convicted in these cases to promptly pay the awarded amounts to avoid further legal action. The Public Prosecution also affirmed its commitment to continuing to take all necessary legal measures to ensure the enforcement of court rulings, uphold the rule of law, and protect legally established rights.
The decision was issued more than one week after a woman in Alexandria has died by suicide during a livestream on Facebook, after speaking about psychological distress and individuals she said “had made her life more difficult” after her ex-husband abstained from paying her alimony.
On April 13 , Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directed the government to expedite the submission of draft laws concerning the Egyptian family to Parliament. The legislative package includes the Muslim Family Law, the Christian Family Law, and the Family Support Fund.
