Egypt’s FM Discusses Strengthening ties and Regional Developments with British Counterpart

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, held a phone call on Friday with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations and address the latest regional developments. During the call, Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of building upon recent positive developments in bilateral relations.

He expressed a desire to expand cooperation across various political, economic, and trade sectors. According to Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty stressed the need to increase the volume of British investment in Egypt over the coming years. He noted that Egypt’s investment climate has significantly improved following the economic and structural reforms implemented in recent years.

The spokesperson added that the ministers addressed ongoing efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. The Foreign Minister briefed his British counterpart on Egypt’s diplomatic initiatives aimed at containment, reiterating the importance of reaching a negotiated settlement regarding the Iranian nuclear issue that addresses the concerns of all involved parties. He emphasized that concerted regional and international efforts are essential during this critical period to safeguard regional security and achieve stability and development for the region’s people.

Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, the Foreign Minister reviewed progress toward implementing the second phase of the U.S. President’s peace plan. He stressed the importance of supporting the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza and called for the expedited deployment of an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire and the flow of humanitarian aid.

Abdelatty further underscored the necessity of a full Israeli withdrawal from the Strip to pave the way for early recovery and reconstruction. He also emphasized the urgent need to establish a political horizon that fulfills the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state. Minister Abdelatty also updated the British Foreign Secretary on the latest developments in Sudan and Egypt’s ongoing efforts within the framework of the Quartet Mechanism.

He stressed the importance of reaching a swift humanitarian truce as a precursor to a comprehensive ceasefire and the launch of a Sudanese-owned political process. Abdelatty highlighted the priority of establishing safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the unhindered delivery of aid to the Sudanese people. He reiterated Egypt’s firm stance in support of Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as well as the preservation of its national institutions.
