The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday approved an Egypt-authored resolution declaring Israel’s continued occupation and de facto annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights illegal. The measure, demanding Israel’s withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 line, passed with 123 votes in favour, seven against and 41 abstentions.
The resolution reiterates that Israel’s 1981 decision to impose its laws and administration on the Golan is “null and void” and has no legal effect. The resolution again calls on Israel to pull back fully from the occupied Golan in line with relevant Security Council decisions, saying the long-running occupation and effective annexation remain an obstacle to a just and lasting regional peace. Syria welcomed the vote and expressed appreciation to Egypt for submitting the draft.
