The Office of the Provincial Commissioner in North West has issued a strong call for public vigilance as the second phase of the Safer Festive Season Operation Shanela II gets underway. With the holiday season in full swing, police are urging citizens to remain cautious in homes, shopping malls, tourist attractions, and while travelling along major freeways, provincial routes, and tourist corridors.

Heightened Crime Risks
Authorities warn that the festive period is often marked by specific crime dynamics, including alcohol abuse by some citizens and motorists. Police stress that responsibility and caution are essential to reduce risks during this time.

Road Safety Appeal
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and strictly obey traffic regulations. Law enforcement will intensify road safety operations to curb reckless driving and ensure compliance with traffic laws.

Liquor Regulation Enforcement
The North West Liquor Licensing Act, 2016 outlines rules for the responsible sale and consumption of alcohol. Police have cautioned that enforcement officers will act decisively against anyone selling liquor in contradiction of their licence, reinforcing the importance of compliance during the festive season.

Protecting Schools During Closure
With schools closing for the year, police emphasize the need to safeguard educational facilities against vandalism and break-ins. Communities, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), and Community Police Forums (CPFs) are encouraged to work closely with law enforcement to ensure schools remain secure. This will allow learners to return in 2026 to facilities in the same condition they left them, ensuring the timely commencement of learning.
