Polish para-athletes have clinched their fifth and sixth gold medals on day four of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, India. Poland also added its first silver and fifth bronze, moving into second place in the medal standings, just behind Brazil.
Magdalena Andruszkiewicz set a world record of 16.82 s to win the Women’s 100 m T72, while Róża Kozakowska claimed gold in the Women’s Club Throw F32. T72 athletes have moderate coordination impairments and use three-wheeled frames; F32 competitors face moderate to severe impairments affecting all limbs and the trunk.
Despite having stomach problems which left her unconscious while a doctor “fought from midnight until the early morning to get me to compete”, delighted Kozakowska said: “I feel emotion, joy, relief, pride (…) For me, this is the most beautiful, the most difficult, the most cosmic medal.” The championships, featuring more than 1,100 athletes from over 100 nations competing in 186 medal events, conclude on Sunday.
