The first gas output from the West Mena gas field in the Mediterranean is scheduled for the end of 2026, according to a Monday Cabinet statement.

The Egyptian government is prioritizing support for the petroleum sector to mitigate the impact of regional conflict. A central focus of this strategy is to ensure consistent payment to international petroleum partners, thereby incentivizing increased exploration and safeguarding national energy supplies.

The Cabinet’s Media Center confirmed that, as part of a joint initiative with international partner Shell, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources is executing an intensive exploration and production program. This project includes drilling new wells in the Mediterranean Sea and developing the West Mena gas field in North East Amriya area of the Mediterranean Sea.

Intensive drilling programs are underway to accelerate output from the West Nile Delta in partnership with major international companies to execute one of the largest gas drilling campaigns in the Mediterranean throughout 2026. The Cabinet emphasized that these measures are vital for meeting domestic market demands and strengthening the nation’s energy security amidst ongoing regional instability.
