Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr Hani Sewilam, received representatives of the European Investment Bank chaired by Mr Lionel Rabai, Director for the European Neighbourhood, and Mr Guido Clary, Head of the EIB Regional Office for North Africa and the Near East in Cairo.
During the meeting, His Excellency reviewed the status of several cooperation areas currently being prepared between the Ministry, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, such as preparing a feasibility study to modernize irrigation systems on agricultural land, and technical support to address sea level rise and saltwater intrusion in the northern delta under the “NWFE” programme. It aims at strengthening climate change adaptation, reducing soil salinity, improving water management and enhancing the resilience of the coastal zone in the four governorates targeted by the study.
His Excellency further stressed the importance of cooperation in the field of smart water management and improving water distribution by expanding the application of modern water-management practices at barrage level.
He also called for preparing a full balance for each water control structure, developing operational simulation models to raise distribution efficiency under varying conditions, and building the capacity of operations teams in modern methods and digital systems.
