H1N1, Rhinovirus Most Common Respiratory Viruses in Egypt, Ministry Says

Deputy Minister of Health and Population Amr Kandil said Friday the country is currently experiencing a significant increase in respiratory virus infections. Kandil confirmed the rise in infection rates during this period, adding that the two most widespread viruses among citizens are H1N1 and rhinovirus.

He added that the increase in respiratory illnesses was expected, with current infection rates similar to those of previous years. Kandil noted that H1N1, a type of influenza A, is the most widespread virus in the country and that its symptoms are generally more severe than those of other respiratory viruses.

He listed the common symptoms of H1N1:
• High fever (may exceed 38 degrees C)
• Runny nose
• Cough (dry or with phlegm)
• Sore throat
• Headache
• Muscle and joint pain
• Extreme fatigue

Symptoms more common in children include:
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
