This latest contribution brings Finland’s total defense aid to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022 to €2.5 billion ($2.6 billion).  As with previous packages, the specifics of the aid remain classified.

This package of almost €200 million has been developed in close cooperation with Ukraine,” stated Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen in a press release. “We are providing precisely the kind of support that will help Ukraine defend itself in the current situation on the front.

Hakkanen emphasized the importance of European support for Ukraine’s defense. “The future of European security depends on us Europeans. Ensuring Ukraine’s independence and its ability to defend itself is the most critical task right now,” he asserted.

This announcement follows a recent substantial military aid package from neighboring Sweden, valued at over $1.2 billion. Sweden’s contribution includes 16 CB90 combat boats, a million rounds of ammunition, trucks, anti-tank missiles, and anti-tank launchers.

The increased European support comes as the United States potentially shifts its focus.
