Egypt has extended its condolences to the government and people of Indonesia over the victims of recent floods and landslides on Sumatra that have killed hundreds. In a statement late Wednesday, the foreign ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with Indonesia amid this painful tragedy, expressing sympathy to the families of the victims and wishing the injured a swift recovery.

Severe monsoon rains and tropical cyclones have hit parts of Asia this week, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka and southern Thailand, leaving more than 1,300 dead, destroying infrastructure and inundating towns. On Sumatra, floods and landslides have killed 708 people, with another 504 still missing, according to Indonesia’s disaster agency. Around 3.2 million people have been affected, 2,600 injured and one million evacuated from high-risk areas. Relief teams continue to face difficulties reaching survivors due to blocked roads and damaged bridges.
