Egypt is pushing for the formation of a Palestinian technocratic committee in Gaza as a step toward restoring the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) governance in the territory, the Egyptian foreign ministry said on Thursday.
The call came during a phone conversation between Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, during which the two discussed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Their discussions covered ongoing international efforts to maintain a ceasefire and calm in Gaza and the West Bank. Abdelatty stressed the importance of fully implementing recently-adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on Gaza and ensuring the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
He also emphasized consultations on deploying an international stabilization force under the resolution. The minister underscored the urgency of establishing a Palestinian technocratic committee to pave the way for the PA’s return to Gaza, and rejected any attempts to displace Palestinians or alter the territory’s geographic or demographic status.
Abdelatty called for increased humanitarian assistance to meet Gaza’s daily needs and stressed ongoing coordination with regional and international partners to support Palestinian rights, including the right to self-determination and an independent state.
In the West Bank, Abdelatty warned of the deteriorating situation, citing rising settler violence and ongoing land confiscations, which he said risk expanding tensions and require immediate international intervention.
The minister praised the role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in supporting Palestinian refugees, calling its role irreplaceable. He also welcomed the UN General Assembly’s decision to renew the UNRWA mandate for another three years.
