China has removed around 628,000 tons of ozone-depleting substances from production and use, representing over half of the total phased out by developing countries, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The announcement was made in Beijing during a conference marking the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
China has tightened controls on non-carbon-dioxide greenhouse gases such as hydrofluorocarbons. Officials noted that these actions reflect the country’s commitment both to restoring the ozone layer and to advancing green, low-carbon industrial development. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS. Internationally, 99% of ozone-depleting substances have been phased out, with the ozone layer showing steady signs of recovery, according to the Ozone Secretariat.
Experts have acknowledged China’s leading role in eliminating harmful emissions and contributing to wider climate change mitigation. Authorities stressed that China will continue to strengthen policy frameworks, international cooperation and sustainable practices in support of global ozone protection and climate goals.
