Cairo: Silta – Ashraf Gaber
Amid reports circulated by some Israeli media outlets regarding alleged coordination to open the Rafah crossing in the coming days for the exit of Palestinians from Gaza, Egypt’s State Information Service affirmed in a statement that Cairo’s position remains unchanged and that any decision to open the crossing is subject to precise political and security agreements.
The source clarified that if an agreement is reached, the opening of the crossing will not be limited to residents leaving Gaza, but will instead allow movement in both directions, for entry as well as exit, in line with the framework outlined in U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan.
This reference carries significant political implications, linking Egypt’s stance to broader international proposals and underscoring that Cairo views the crossing as a matter of sovereignty rather than a mere logistical measure.
The denial also reflects Egypt’s determination to regulate the media narrative surrounding Rafah, particularly given that the crossing serves as a vital lifeline for Gaza’s residents while simultaneously functioning as a political lever in regional balances. While some parties attempt to portray the opening as a unilateral step or direct coordination with Israel, the Egyptian side insists that any decision must be comprehensive and balanced, ensuring two-way movement and broader consensus.
This position once again highlights Cairo’s pivotal role in managing the Gaza file, as it seeks to balance humanitarian considerations with political commitments, while safeguarding its sovereignty in administering the crossing as an integral part of its national security.
