The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) on Sunday launched a humanitarian aid convoy to support the Sudanese people, carrying around 70 tonnes of food, medical supplies, and other relief items. Minister of Social Solidarity and Vice President of the ERC Maya Morsy said the convoy will travel nearly 2,000 kilometres to reach Sudanese territory and will be accompanied by a delegation of Red Crescent volunteers.

The aid includes food parcels, medical supplies and shelter materials, such as mattresses, blankets, winter coverings and other relief items, the ministry said in a statement. The contents were selected based on priority needs coordinated with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, Morsy added.

Morsy said the convoy is the first land-based humanitarian shipment to Sudan, representing a message of solidarity from Egypt to the Sudanese people as they navigate the current critical phase. She said Egypt’s response to the Sudan crisis has been guided by directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to maintain continuous support for Sudan.

She noted that Egypt’s humanitarian response has been the longest-running since the conflict began, spanning nearly 990 days. Morsy added that the convoy would not be the last, stressing Egypt’s commitment to continue providing assistance until the crisis is overcome.

Since 2023, Egypt has sent three maritime aid shipments totalling more than 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian assistance from the ERC to its Sudanese counterpart, according to the statement. Morsy said the ERC has played a key role in supporting Sudanese civilians since the outbreak of the crisis, providing relief assistance, food aid, hygiene kits, health services and psychological support. The ERC volunteers also helped families maintain contact through phone and internet services and facilitated movement between provinces.
