Shanela 2: Safer Festive Season Operations Lead to Over 1,300 Arrests

The police in the province, together with other law enforcement agencies, apprehended 1,325 suspects for various crimes between Monday, 22 December and Sunday, 28 December 2025, during weekly high-density Shanela 2 Safer Festive Season operations conducted across the province.

Arrests and Offences:
The suspects were arrested for crimes including:

  • • Murder
  • • Rape
  • • Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and common assault
  • • Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition
  • • Dealing in drugs and liquor
  • • Possession of drugs
  • • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Of the total arrests, 344 suspects were identified and apprehended by Detectives from circulated wanted lists.

Compliance Inspections:
The operations also targeted crime generators through Joint Law Enforcement compliance inspections, enforcing the Liquor and Second-Hand Goods Acts.

Outcomes included:

  • • Closure of 28 unlicensed liquor outlets.
  • • Confiscation of large quantities of liquor.
  • • Seizure of 8 firearms, 84 rounds of ammunition, • 17 cell phones, 3 vehicles, various drugs, dangerous weapons, fireworks, and tobacco products.

Sun City Operation:
In Bojanala Sub-District 2, five male suspects (aged 25–37) were arrested on Saturday, 27 December 2025 at different addresses in Ledig village near Sun City for possession of drugs.

Confiscated items included:

  • • Mandrax, rock, crystal meth, nyaope, and khat (street value: R10,500)
  • • R18,000 cash believed to be proceeds of crime

The suspects are expected to appear in the Mogwase Magistrate’s Court today.
