Sweden and Poland have signed a new strategic partnership agreement, aiming to strengthen bilateral defense ties and regional security.
The deal was finalized during a meeting in Sweden on Thursday between Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson.
“This agreement makes our relationship stronger than ever before,” said Kristersson. He described the partnership as a reaffirmation of shared values and a commitment to protecting the Baltic region. “Poland’s security is Sweden’s security,” he said.
The Swedish premier said both countries agreed to work on “broader and more effective bilateral cooperation in the field of defense,” with a particular focus on Baltic Sea security. Tusk, meanwhile, said the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) group of countries were united on critical security issues, including the war in Ukraine. “We speak exactly the same language on matters of security and Europe’s economic independence,” he added.
Tusk thanked NB8 leaders for their interest in strengthening security in the Baltic region. “We will be discussing some form of Baltic Sea policing,” he said.
“Of course, we still have to debate the details, but I am already grateful today for the full understanding of the need to monitor the situation in the Baltic Sea and ensure security.” In Sweden, I don’t need to convince anyone about the importance of the Baltic Sea in the security system of all Europe and the entire Western world.
