Travelers using the vital rail connection between Sweden and Denmark should prepare for disruptions and extended journey times as crucial maintenance work continues until June 9th. Swedish public transport authority Skånetrafiken has confirmed that only one rail track will be operational during this period due to urgent replacement of 3,500 meters of rail along the tunnel segment of the combined bridge-tunnel linking the two countries. This essential infrastructure project aims to ensure long-term safety and reliability but will inevitably cause delays and require travelers to adjust their plans accordingly.
The ongoing work focuses on replacing worn-out rail sections in the tunnel part of the Öresund Bridge, the unique combined bridge-tunnel structure that connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden. The 3,500 meters of rail being replaced are critical to maintaining smooth, safe operations for one of Northern Europe’s busiest cross-border train routes.
Skånetrafiken emphasized the urgency of the work, stating that it is vital to conduct the replacements promptly to prevent future disruptions or safety issues. Given the complexity of the task and the location within the tunnel section, only one track will remain open, severely limiting train capacity.
With only one track available, trains will need to operate with reduced frequency and speed. To cope with the reduced capacity, Skånetrafiken plans to introduce replacement bus services during rush hours. These buses will support commuters and other travelers in maintaining their journey schedules as much as possible. However, passengers should be aware that bus transfers will add extra time to their overall trips and could lead to crowding during peak periods.
It is important to note that bicycles will not be permitted on these replacement buses. Cyclists will need to find alternative travel arrangements during this maintenance window.
The primary affected route is the train line between Malmö in southern Sweden and Copenhagen Airport in Denmark. This is one of the busiest international commuter routes in Scandinavia, serving thousands of passengers daily who travel for work, study, or leisure.
Commuters and travelers on this route should allow for significantly longer journey times than usual. Delays are expected, particularly during morning and evening peak travel periods when traffic volumes are highest.
