In the aftermath of the draw that set up Portugal’s clash with Denmark in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League A, Roberto Martínez reflected on the knockout round against the Nordic side. According to the national coach, “playing the second game in Portugal is important,” emphasizing that the “attacking football” favored by Brian Riemer, the Danish national coach, is also a factor to consider.

On hosting Denmark in the second leg, Martínez stated: “It’s important to be here, in the right place. After that, all opponents are important. Copenhagen is a good stadium, the atmosphere is fantastic. It will be a good game; playing the second game in Portugal is crucial. The fans will be very important for us to be victorious and reach the final-four.”

Regarding the philosophy of the Danish coach, he added: “He is a new coach with ideas that continue the good work of the previous manager. Brian Riemer likes to play attacking football. I think it’s a very good choice for Denmark and I believe he will develop and utilize all the talent of Danish football for the national team.”

Speaking about the virtues of the opponent, he said: “They have very experienced players like Schmeichel, who is the captain. Then there are players who are growing rapidly. We are familiar with Hjulmand, Hojbjerg, and Eriksen, who is very experienced, and Danish football does a great job in player development. Denmark is the second country in producing players who play in the Champions League. It’s going to be a very competitive match.”

On the potential opponent in the final-four, Martínez concluded: “What I see is Denmark. After that, we need to continue to grow. If we deserve to look towards the final-four, we will do that in the future.”
