Nordic nations stand “in solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland amid US President Donald Trump’s threats to seize the autonomous Danish territory, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said Monday.
“You can be fully certain that we stand by you and by Denmark in solidarity,” Store said, addressing Greenland’s prime minister at a meeting of Nordic prime ministers in Turku, Finland. “The Arctic is a regulated area. The Law of the Sea applies, the responsibility of coastal states applies, and we will stand by any community that is feeling pressure on those values.
Nordic leaders have strongly reaffirmed their support for Greenland and Denmark in response to US President Donald Trump’s threats to seize Greenland. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store emphasized that the Arctic is a regulated area governed by international law, and coastal states have the responsibility to uphold those regulations.
Trump has repeatedly stated that the US needs Greenland for strategic and security reasons, and he has refused to rule out the use of force to acquire it. His comments have caused concern not only in Greenland but also in other Nordic regions, including Iceland and Norway’s Svalbard archipelago.
Greenland’s leaders have firmly rejected any possibility of US control, stating that the island’s future must be decided by its own people. Meanwhile, Nordic nations continue to stress the importance of international law and solidarity in the face of external pressure.
