A new town centre is set to take shape in Höfn in Hornafjörður after the municipal council approved a letter of intent with the development company Landsbyggð ehf. last weekend. As reported by RÚV, the agreement marks the start of a major regeneration project that will include housing, retail, hospitality, and public spaces in the heart of the town.

Mayor Sigurjón Andrésson said the town’s new central square will likely be located near Heppan, the site of a recently restored slaughterhouse, with residential areas planned further north and potential development around the inner harbour. The plan represents a significant step for Höfn, as many municipalities have drawn up similar visions for urban renewal without real progress.

Landsbyggð is already known for leading the redevelopment of the Selfoss town centre. They will now oversee the project in partnership with the Municipality of Hornafjörður and local seafood company Skinney-Þinganes, which first proposed the idea.

The proposal also includes a hotel building near the harbour’s edge, replacing older fishing cabins and industrial structures. A public consultation will take place before final plans are approved, following the same model used in Selfoss. “This is an important milestone for Höfn,” said Sigurjón. “We now have a capable partner with proven experience in creating thriving town centres.”
