Finland’s population office updates count, reducing it by nearly 4,000

Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) has announced that its Population Information System is removing 3,900 people from the country’s population count. The ones being removed are those whose place of residence in the country has been unknown to the office for two years, according to the agency. The updated count affects those who are still registered in a municipality but whose actual place of residence has been unknown since the beginning of 2022.

“In practice, these are people who have moved away from Finland but have not thought to submit an emigration notification. With the update, they will no longer have a municipality of residence in Finland and are removed from the Finnish population,” the agency said in a press release on Tuesday.

The DVV’s databases contain information about everyone who resides in Finland. The agency collects data on births, deaths, addresses, marriages and divorces as well as received citizenships. The agency said the reduced figure will be reflected in the population number on Wednesday. It made a similar update to the country’s population count in May 2023.

The DVV displays Finland’s population count on its website as well as on a digital outdoor sign at its office in Helsinki. As of Tuesday afternoon, Finland’s population stood at 5,649,759. But the figure is set to decline by around 3,900 on Wednesday, due to the update.
