Egyptian, Greek FMs Discuss Ways to De-Escalate Tensions in the Region

Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, received a phone call Friday, from Giorgos Gerapetritis, the Greek Foreign Minister, as part of their regular communication to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on the latest regional developments. During the call, the two ministers affirmed the deep-rooted and historical ties between Egypt and Greece, and commended the qualitative leap in relations, particularly after their elevation to the level of a strategic partnership.

Minister Abdelatty expressed his aspiration to further enhance economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries, and to expand the frameworks of bilateral cooperation to include new areas. He also expressed his appreciation for Greece’s support for Egypt within the various institutions of the European Union. The call also addressed the extremely dangerous developments in the region, with the Foreign Minister outlining Egypt’s contacts and efforts aimed at de-escalation and prioritizing the diplomatic track to contain the situation.

For his part, the Greek Foreign Minister expressed his country’s deep appreciation for Egypt’s mediation efforts and its endeavors to achieve de-escalation and a ceasefire. The call also addressed the situation in Libya, with Minister Abdelatty reaffirming Egypt’s unwavering position on the necessity of preserving the unity and stability of the Libyan state and unifying its institutions.

He stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive Libyan-led solution that fulfills the aspirations of the Libyan people and safeguards their sovereignty. He also emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to advance the political process in Libya, leading to simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

The two ministers agreed on the necessity of continuing coordination and consultation within the framework of the strategic relations between their countries, supporting efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the region, and working to prevent the region from sliding into further instability.
