Denmark on Friday crashed out of the Sudirman Cup after losing against South Korea in the quarter-finals.
Friday’s match against South Korea was already decided in the fourth out of five possible matches, so the South Koreans won 3-1 after winning the women’s doubles in humiliating figures.
Anders Antonsen became the only Dane to win his match, when he defeated Jeon Hyeok-jin 21-17, 20-22, 21-12.
Thanks to Antonsen’s win, Denmark reduced the deficit to 1-2, but in the subsequent women’s doubles South Korea clinched the tie and will play for medals at the weekend.
Alexandra Boje and Natasja P. Anthonisen were left with absolutely no chance of staging an upset against the favored South Korean constellation, and were also crushed 7-21, 3-21.
In advance, the opening mixed doubles match looked like the Danish key to an overall victory.
Unfortunately for the Danes, Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund came up short losing 17-21, 13-21 to Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung.
As expected, Line Kjaersfeldt was taught a virtual badminton lesion in her match against world No 1, A Se-young who won 21-8, 21-7.
The final men’s doubles was then scrapped from the program as the tie was already decided.
Denmark could have secured a somewhat easier opponent in the quarter-final by winning their preliminary group, but lost the decisive match to Indonesia.
