Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’ was played on multiple major Finnish radio stations at the exact same time last week to celebrate the iconic Euro dance track’s 25th anniversary.
Although initially released in Finland in October 1999, ‘Sandstorm’ was re-released globally in 2000 to mark the occasion, the track echoed across the country’s airwaves on the morning of Thursday (8th May).
“At 09:15 this morning, radio stations and shopping centers across Finland came together to play Sandstorm at exactly the same time to celebrate 25 years,” wrote Darude on Integram. “You could hear it in malls, schools, everywhere! Thank you everyone!”
The countrywide event tied in with the announcement of Darude’s upcoming headline show in Helsinki on 6th September. The show will take place as part of his global STORM25 tour, which has already seen him play across the United States, and which will see him playing across Europe this summer.
‘Sandstorm’ is one of Finland’s most commercially successful singles of all time, having stuck around at the summit of the country’s dance chart for 17 consecutive weeks upon its release.
The song has become a viral sensation multiple times over, having gained considerable momentum as on online meme over the past decade or so.
Most recently, it was featured in the trailer for the new Bandai Namco action RPG game SAND LAND. In 2018, it even became the alarm sound of an actual sandstorm detector.
Last year, DJ Mag met Darude to talk about the track’s genesis and never-ending shelf life for our making of a Dance Classic series. Watch it here.
