This decision, driven by recommendations from the nation’s defense chief, aims to enhance the operational capabilities of Denmark’s military and Home Guard amid rising geopolitical tensions in Europe and the Arctic.

Financed through the country’s Acceleration Fund, the move underscores Copenhagen’s commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure to meet evolving security challenges, particularly in the Baltic Sea region and Greenland.

The Danish Ministry of Defense’s announcement reflects a broader strategy to address the rapidly changing security environment. The funds will support the acquisition of a substantial number of off-road vehicles, expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026, enhancing the mobility and responsiveness of the Danish Army’s heavy brigade and the Home Guard.

Additionally, the accelerated procurement of engineering machines will bolster the military’s ability to construct fortifications, maintain infrastructure, and support operations in harsh environments, such as Greenland’s Arctic terrain.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the urgency of these acquisitions, stating, “We are in a historic buildup of the Danish defense, where the pace of acquisitions is absolutely critical. I am pleased that, on the defense chief’s recommendations, we can increase the acquisition of off-road vehicles and advance investments in engineering machines, which will positively contribute to the tasks of the Armed Forces and the Home Guard.”

While specific details about the types of off-road vehicles remain undisclosed, they are likely to include light armored platforms similar to those used by NATO allies, such as the Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle [JLTV] or the Supacat High Mobility Transporter [HMT].

The Oshkosh JLTV, for instance, is a proven platform widely adopted by the U.S. military and other NATO members. Measuring approximately 20.5 feet in length and weighing up to 22,000 pounds, the JLTV offers a balance of mobility, protection, and payload capacity.

Its V-shaped hull provides enhanced defense against improvised explosive devices [IEDs], while its modular design allows for the integration of advanced communication systems, such as the Link-16 network, and weapon systems, including remote-controlled turrets with 12.7mm machine guns or anti-tank missile launchers.
