Hundreds of thousands of Danes will hit the roads or hop on trains, buses and planes at Christmas, making it one of the busiest times of the year for travelling. Here’s what you need to know.

Danes celebrate Christmas on the 24th December, Christmas Eve. This falls on a Tuesday this year, meaning travel could be split between Friday 20th December and Monday the 23rd.

While December 23rd will be a working day, it precedes Christmas Eve – on which few people work – followed by two public holidays, December 25th and 26th.

That leaves Friday, December 27th as the only day next week in which Danes are more likely to be working than either travelling or celebrating Christmas.

Some 250,000 people are expected to cross the Great Belt Bridge between Zealand and Funen, operator Sund & Bælt has said in a statement. The busiest day is expected to be Boxing Day, Thursday December 26th.

Motorists travelling across the bridge between 10am and 3pm on the 26th can expect busy traffic, but the bridge operator said it does not expect extensive queuing to form.

The spread of the Christmas holidays over a number of travel days will reduce the risk of queuing prior to Christmas.
