A massive volcano erupted in Iceland after almost eight centuries. The stunning visuals from the scene have left the Internet in awe. The eruption took place on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland for the seventh time this year. Before 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula had not seen volcanic activity in 800 years, according to a BBC report.
An aerial video of the stunning eruption was captured by a passenger from a plane’s window. Kayleigh, the passenger, shared the video on X and it garnered over six million views. “My life has peaked. Nothing is ever topping this. Volcano erupted last night in Iceland,” he wrote.
Reacting to the video, an X user wrote, “Congrats on getting to witness it. I went back last yr to see it. By far coolest experience of my life. I don’t think anything will ever top. I just missed this one by 2 days. I left Monday night. Super bummed.”
“Flying so close? With ashes? Looks like a big risk to me honestly,” another user commented. “Wow that is unreal. Thanks for showing that to us,” a third user reacted. “Amazing. Iceland really is the land of ICE & FIRE. It’s surreal,” another user wrote.
According to ABC News, the volcanic eruption has led to evacuations at the Blue Lagoon, an iconic tourist destination, and the nearby town of Grindavik. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the eruption stretched about 1.8 miles long.
