Denmark, France, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom will participate in the development of NATO\u2019s Forward Land Forces (FLF) in Finland. The announcement was made by NATO defense ministers during the working dinner of the defense ministers\u2019 session at the NATO Summit on 24 June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finland\u2019s Minister of Defense Antti H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen welcomed the decision, highlighting the significance of the cooperation. \u201cI am very pleased that such important and close allies will be involved in developing the FLF in Finland. It sends a strong message that Europe bears its share in NATO, and that these five Allies are prepared to strengthen NATO\u2019s deterrence and defense in the north,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweden will act as the Framework Nation for the FLF in Finland, playing a key role in planning and building the multinational presence in close cooperation with NATO and the participating countries. \u201cOur cooperation with Sweden has run smoothly, and we are glad that the preparations concerning the contributing nations have proceeded as planned,\u201d said Minister H\u00e4kk\u00e4nen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FLF form part of NATO\u2019s peacetime deterrence and defense activities. Under normal conditions, multinational troops will train and exercise alongside Finland\u2019s national defense forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should the security situation change, the FLF presence could be scaled up to brigade level as part of NATO\u2019s operational planning. During peacetime, the forces also test their readiness to reinforce the region rapidly if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FLF presence in Finland will be based primarily in the northern regions of Rovaniemi and Sodankyl\u00e4 in Lapland. The official inauguration of the FLF in Finland is scheduled for 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a joint statement, the nations involved underlined that FLF Finland is \u201can important part of NATO\u2019s deterrence and defense posture on the Northern Flank and a strong expression of Allied unity and solidarity.\u201d The FLF\u2019s role will be central to strengthening NATO\u2019s posture and deterrence against Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By enhancing the ability to receive, integrate and deploy Allied units in the region, the participating countries aim to reinforce the collective security of NATO. \u201cTogether, we enhance Allied deterrence and defense in the High North and for the whole Alliance,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
